A type of machine that is specially used to unload and load heavy, big freight containers is called a container forklift. They are used to transport freight off and on ships, truck beds and trains. Container forklifts are the most sturdy and biggest types of forklifts made. They need to be extremely maneuverable on terrain that is uneven and have sufficient power and torque to lift bulky containers safely. Normally, they have heavy-duty diesel engines and large pneumatic tires.
Like all kinds of forklifts, a container forklift uses forks to be able to lift the containers. Forks have to be positioned to ensure the load is secure during transport. Some kinds of container forklifts are only meant to lift the containers a few meters off the ground. Other container handlers utilize another technique for carrying containers to greater heights. A container handler utilizes a device attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machinery is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
Lifting and transferring containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Regular forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated according to the maximum weight they can handle. The forklift's capabilities must never be exceeded and should be posted prominently in the cockpit.
