Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is provided by huge industrial batteries that have to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety measures should always be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be located near the charging area. The path to the station should not be blocked and a worker who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit things like for example lighters or matches to be utilized while someone is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
