Choosing Between Pneumatic and Cushion Tires
Forklift tires contribute a lot to your machine's handling and safety features, as well as impacting maintenance expenses. The kind of forklift determines to a large extent the kind of tire since the majority of forklifts are constructed with a particular frame which accepts only a particular kind of tire. It helps to know the properties of both cushion and pneumatic tires before choosing a tire.
Instructions
1 Check your forklift owner handbook for specifications concerning tires. Most likely your forklift would function either on pneumatic tires or cushion tires. This will limit your choice to the type of tire for which the forklift frame is built.
2 Check the type of forklift. Electric pallet jack trucks and electric forklift trucks usually are built to utilize cushion tires which do not require much friction. Pneumatic tires are usually utilized for forklifts that run on diesel or liquid propane gas.
3 Check the type of terrain. Soft cushion tires are constructed for even grounds while pneumatic tires are best for rough terrain. Cushion tires, if utilized on uneven ground, can cause the forklift to get stuck as they are set lower. Pneumatic tires perform well on packed stones, crushed concrete and gravel but not on potholed surfaces and really rough terrain.
4 Make sure you know the space limitations. Forklifts used mostly indoors must be able to pivot in tight areas. Cushion tires work better than pneumatic tires in those types of situations.
